The play Madea, in my opinion, would be a good piece of literature to read. It can be tied to Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. The story if a of a woman who was betrayed and seeks revenge. Madea is powerful play that can be easily used to discuss and analyze. I you haven't read it, or seen it. A woman is betrayed by her husband and goes to drastic measures to make him feel the pain he caused her. She kills her husband's new wife and even his own sons. It is a twisted tale and that can easily hook these short attention span college students.

Great Invention

The creation of the light bulb has paved the way for the our civilization today. We now meet at night which can be nearly turned into day. We now use light to our amusement in laptops, at concerts, in the medical field, and much more. In 1874, Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans patented the first electric light bulb after successfully testing it in Toronto. Afterwards, they sold the patent to Thomas Edison. Not the smartest move. From there, Edison searched for a way to build a practical light bulb. Using carbonized bamboo filament, Edison's light bulb could last 1200 hours. Although much of the world lacks electricity, this technology has contributed to the development of the world. Whether it is lighting a room for surgery or lighting a room full of world political leaders, this invention has left a permanent print on the development of mankind.

Dumbest Invention

Cry No More US Patent Issued 2000

Many people become irritated by the sound of baby crying. Parents can sometimes we embarrassed in church, the movies or at a restaurant. With this in mind, an inventor created the Cry No More. This device puts a pacifier in the baby's mouth with straps that constrain it there so the baby cannot open its mouth to cry.

This invention is dumb for many reasons. One is the immoral aspect of this device. If a person can't deal with the sound of a baby crying, then don't have one. If it is at a restaurant or some other public facility, then don't bring; call a babysitter. Also, by not allowing a child to cry and express its needs, it can become hungry or sick. Crying is natural for a baby and to interfere with nature, in my opinion, is not right.

Our Outline

I. Our topic is worth discussing because of its influence on the world. In it's 40 years of existence, it has opened the doors for many and impacted the world we know.

II. Peace Corps is the most renowned international volunteer organization. Its has affected the lives of millions, opened doors of opportunities, and strove to accomplish better foreign relations.

III. It is a government program which has the support of the U.S. government. Its credibility is well established.

IV. Peace Corps has been invited to help communities in 139 of roughly 193 countries of the world.

V. Might be well known, but difficult selection process, not very effective critics say.

The Film

Overall, the film in my opinion was alright. My interpretation of the film's argument was that he attempted to send a message of doing something with our fortunate opportunity to go to college. He wants us to take any opportunity we can to help anyway we can. Personally, I do not feel the film was very effective. To me the film had elements of pathos, but didn't go the best of jobs. He spoke about the poverty and the less fortunate which pulls at anyone's heart strings, but it seemed empty and nonconvincing. It could have been because I've seen similar stories before, and this one lacks any creative edge to have it stand out. I guess that would be flaw of the movie. Overall, I'm glad that there are people who care and want to educate others, but I just thought the presentation could have been better.

Scrub's Synthesis To Oz

Watching the episode of Scrubs, anyone can easily see the relation to the 1939's "the Wizard of Oz." The writers were focusing on three different quests to achieve certain attributes. They are heart, brains, and courage. For heart, the writers of Scrubs place Turk on a quest for an actual human heart in order to participate in a transplant surgery, the counterpart of the movie's Tin-man character. Elliot is struggling to maintain the persona of an all knowing doctor and is challenged to speak in front of a group of experts. She comes to find that she, like the Scarecrow, had the brains, but just needed to tap into the well of knowledge. Finally Carla, the child desiring nurse finds that she cannot stand children, but Dr. Cox tells her that she will have the courage when the time has come. The synthesis of these two works shows the journey many go through to find something they didn't know they had all along.

Allegory of the Cave synthesis

In Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," he makes a point of understanding the perspective of reality. The Matrix shares this theme. Plato wrote "when he came into the light, the brilliance would fill his eyes and he would not be able to see even one of the things now called real?" He argues that man is used to darkness and to see the light of the sun would fill him with a feeling of greatness. The light of the sun is referring to truth. As in the Matrix, the world if the Matrix is a computer system, but the inhabitants of it believe their lives to be true. This is due to their perception.

From both movies, the theme of perception of reality both tie into finding the truth. What humans know goes as far as what they see, which makes them believe that. The Matrix's computer world and the Plato's cave are bridge together and meet at point of true knowledge.

An Indian Teacher among Indians

Apparently we were supposed to write an AAP on this story, didn't know.

Author- A passionate young Indian woman who wanted to help her people. She had an internal conflict over her duty as a teacher and worker for the white man and being the daughter of a proud saddened Native American woman.

Audience- Americans, that can see her struggle.

Purpose-She chose this to allow them to understand more than the history of the nation, but also the tremendous amounts of emotions that were tied into these historic times.

V For Vendetta

"V for Vendetta" depicts a totalitarian government in England. In a society where curfews are enforced and the government is responsible for the death of thousands of their own citizens. "Traitors" disappear in the night, never to be seen or heard from by family again. Life is directed by fear, and no one seems to do anything about it, except one. A rouge terrorist named V, attempts to awaken the English citizens and bring down the terrorizing government. With the assistance of a common girl named Evie, V carries out his plans for revenge and justice and hopefully restore the ideas that promote democracy.

Pathos: Benefits students to have ID. i.e. Swimming Pool, Parking Passes, Book Checkout.

Fake Essay

For an effective essay, an author must be credible in his or her topic of discussion. In the case of Chris Godsey, he is able to prove his credibility. "I'm one of those guys who are hung up on their looks.--I concentrate on MTV, Hollywood, and US weekly ideals of masculine value and attractiveness." (Ashley Russel's blog) The entire discussion is on the problem of the ideal male body and trying to live up to it, and here the author is experiencing this first hand which makes his point quite valid.

Author Anne Lammott, establishes her credibility to discuss Shitty First Drafts. "For me and most of the other writers I know, writing is not rapturous." Here she states that she as a writer, does not have the euphoric and easy grace when writing. This sets a trust between the reader and the author.

Godsey: Author, Audience, Purpose & Ethos, Logos, Pathos

Author: Godsey is a male who for half his life "...been constantly conflicted, never content and remarkably self centered." Always "comparing myself (Godsey) to narrow, arbitrary ideas about what we all "need" to look like." (117) His life experience is what the essay is essentially about.

Audience: Males who have been fooled by this massive trick. Those who have fallen to the false ideas taught to them by society and media. "Society is telling them now, more than ever before, that their bodies define who they are as men."

Purpose: Godsey attempts hack at what has become rooted in our minds, which is this idea that bodies define who men are. His main point, "Masculine value doesn't lie in powers of attraction and conquest."


Ethos: Considering that this is a completely personal view, I think Godsey is perfectly entitled to his opinion and credibility must be given. He reports on a first hand experience which provides supports for his claims.

Logos: To support his claim that the image of man has changed, he points out the transition from stars like Clark Gable to Brad Pitt. The difference, was a few more sets of abs, hairless bodies, and chiseled arms.

Pathos: Millions of American men feel insecure, shallowness, and inferiority due to their worry "that their hair is thinning, their breasts are fat, or their penis is too small"

Lamott: Audience, Author, and Purpose

In Shitty First Drafts, Lamott answers the questions of Audience, Author and Purpose. The audience that Lamott seeks seems to be anyone who overestimates the abilities of successful writers. Lamott focuses (her purpose) on demystifying the belief that all great writers can magically produce a best seller on the first try. On the contrary, like everyone else, they must begin with a shitty first draft. As a previous food critic and author of several novels, Lamott uses her first hand experiences and accounts from fellow writers to justify her position and credibility.
